History - Advanced Higher
The American Civil War is the focus of study in Advanced Higher. The course breaks up into three main themes:
- The causes of the war.
- The course of the war.
- The consequences of the war.
As well as studying the facts of the war, pupils are encouraged, through personal reading, to explore the key historical debates surrounding the topic.
The final exam involves two essays from any aspect of the course and three source handling questions. Pupils are also expected to research and write a 4,000 word dissertation across the year on an area of the Civil War they have chosen.
