This week the spotlight falls upon Carol Neilson, Head of the Maths department. Zoe Davies finds out some of the lesser known facts about this Moray lass.

Music – listening and playing (piano, bass guitar), running and shopping
 
  Interesting fact:
Been known to participate, and enjoy some of the crazier things in life such as paragliding and gorge walking!

What do you like most about teaching maths?

Probably the moment a pupil understands what’s going on, when their face lights up and they say “Ah, I’ve got it!”, that look of dawning realisation.

How vital do you think maths is?

Absolutely vital, it makes the world go round

What was your best subject at school?

Mrs Neilson
Would it be surprising if it were maths?

What has been your favourite teaching experience so far?

Mrs Neilson
It’s a bit difficult to identify one favourite experience from 30 years teaching, but I’m glad to say there have been many enjoyable classes, trips and activities

What would be your advice for someone seeking a career in maths?

Mrs Neilson
Work hard in school, and explore areas of maths that aren’t in the curriculum – get a wide range of knowledge about maths

What is your dream holiday destination?

Mrs Neilson
Italy, probably on a cooking holiday, then I can learn how to cook proper Italian food, all the while enjoying the beautiful surroundings and the excellent wine
