TG & CV

When you were our age did you want to become a teacher?

Mr Kerrigan
No, I was working as a sports instructor - athletics mainly.

TG & CV

Why switch careers to a DT teacher?

Mr Kerrigan
I got fed up with it. I did nearly ten years of sports so I went to university and studied engineering.

TG & CV

Have you got any advice for people leaving school this year?

Mr Kerrigan
Just get a job as soon as possible, anything you can add to your CV, and try to enjoy what you’re doing. And if it’s not fun, don’t do it.

TG & CV

Who would play you in a movie?

Mr Kerrigan
Bagpuss. The puppet. It looks like me. Same eyes.

TG & CV

What’s on your iPod?

Mr Kerrigan
Lots of Jazz, lots of classical music.

TG & CV

Have any of your pupils seriously injured themselves?

Mr Kerrigan
Yes, When I was a new teacher, I was in the class, and it was when pupils were still allowed to use band saws, and there was a boy with an artificial arm whose party piece was to put it through the band saw. So I came into the class and there was this guy saying ‘Mr Kerrigan, I think I’ve done something wrong’ And he’d shoved his arm through the band saw. And I fainted. I thought he was going to die. But that was the highlight of my career watching him walk out of his class with his arm. He became a joiner in the end I think.

TG & CV

Who inspires you?

Mr Kerrigan
I get inspired by the pupils I’ve seen with a lot of hassle in life but they try their best and they always come out trying to do better. I get inspired by that.

TG & CV

What song would you have played at your funeral?

Mr Kerrigan
The Rhubarb and Custard theme, as the coffin slowly goes into the fire.

Thank you for your time.
