Ohio Exchange 2017/18

Since 1998, Madras College has been sending a group of sixth year students on an exchange programme to Upper Arlington, Ohio. This October, the exchange took place. On the first full day pupils joined their exchange partners at school and got to experience a day in a typical American High school. Madras pupils were shocked by how different it was; weekly tests were the norm and the focus on sports was incredible. On the Saturday, all the young people went to an Ohio State University football game and over 100,000 people attended! They also went to Cedar Point, one of America's largest theme parks; Columbus Zoo, where they could feed giraffes; and Columbus Art Museum, where we learned about local art culture. One pupil said "One of my favourite activities was the early Thanksgiving dinner that we attended towards the end of the week. This allowed us to experience a proper American holiday, and try some of the traditional Thanksgiving dishes such as pumpkin pie."

Madras pupils are now looking forward to March, when their partners will join them in St. Andrews and can try some of our Scottish cuisine as well. The Americans will also have a trip to Edinburgh, visit the new V&A in Dundee and enjoy many more of our local landmarks. Madras pupils are particularly excited for the ceilidh night and can't wait to teach their American friends some Scottish country dancing! Hopefully they will enjoy their trip to Scotland as much as the Madras pupils enjoyed their visit to Ohio.
