Ohio Exchange - October 2011

For the 15 students and two teachers leaving school on October 7th, a fun packed ten days was ahead of them! As part of the Upper Arlington Exchange Programme Madras pupils were heading to Ohio in the North-East of the U.S.A, to experience the culture and lifestyle of the country.

After a long flight overseas, the pupils were united with their exchange partners and host families, met by an enthusiastic reception at the airport. The week then proceeded, jam-packed with activities, such as: the Cedar Point theme park, the Blue Jackets professional ice hockey game and the Columbus Zoo. The group also attended many of the Upper Arlington High School’s sports games and spent time within the high school itself.

One particular highlight was the hosting of a Thanksgiving Feast for all of the Scottish students. The American students made speeches to welcome Madras pupils and in turn it gave the Scots a chance to express their own gratitude to their hosts. On the Saturday, the Scottish students experienced their first Homecoming dance, a great chance to dress up and for some to show off their kilts!

Everybody got on very well with their partners and host families, forming lasting friendships which will hopefully go well beyond their time at school. We only hope that Madras can put on such a good show for them when they come here - fundraising for which begins soon!
