At the end of June, 32 S3 and S4 pupils travelled to Kiel
, accompanied by Miss Orem, Mr Irving and Mr Fox. The group flew from Edinburgh to Bremen and continued the journey to Kiel
by coach. The S4 pupils were reunited with their partners whom they’d met last year in St Andrews when the Kiel students came to visit. The S3 pupils met their partners for the first time, though they had been emailing each other in the months beforehand.
During the 10 day stay in Kiel our pupils attended special classes in German, music and geography. There was also plenty to do after school as the famous ‘Kieler Woche
’ international sailing week was taking place. There were also day trips to Lübeck
(the home of marzipan
) and to the North Sea coast where pupils and staff walked, in glorious sunshine, across the mudflats to the island of Ölland.
World cup fever prevailed throughout, with many pupils going along to watch Germany’s matches on big screens in the city centre. Our annual sports competition also took place, with the highlight being the tug of war.
The farewell evening ceilidh brought the host families together and the next morning, after a tearful farewell, we returned home.
