This summer, four Madras Students travelled to Ohtawara, Japan on the St Andrews Ohtawara exchange. They spent two weeks with their host families, all of whom provided warm and caring hospitality, and gave the pupils a fascinating glimpse into traditional Japanese life. Delegates of the local council took them on daily excursions to the sights in the area, including a trip to the shrines and temples at Nikko, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and to Disneyland Tokyo. The students took part in a traditional Japanese Tea Ceremony, and, dressed as samurai and princesses, paraded through the city in celebration of the vibrant Yoichi festival. The group thoroughly enjoyed the trip - tasting the cuisine, marvelling at the sights, and experiencing the culture.
