About Us

Pupils studying Modern Studies at Madras College are taught by three experienced subject specialists. We strive to excell in all areas, allowing our students to become successful and effective learners, using a wide variety of teaching methods and constantly updating our learning resources.

The People in Scoiety outcomes in Curriculum for Excellence place Modern Studies at the heart of enabling the young people who attend Madras College to develop their understanding of the world by learning about other people and their values, how society and political changes have shaped Scotland and how to make sense of changes in society and international conflicts .

With greater understanding comes the opportunity and ability to influence events by exercising informed and responsible citizenship. Learning in Modern Sudies enables children and young people to:

  • broaden their understanding of the world by learning about human activities and achievements
  • develop their understanding of their own values, beliefs and cultures and those of others
  • develop an understanding of the principles of democracy and citizenship through experience of critical and independent thinking
  • explore and evaluate different types of sources and evidence
  • establish firm foundations for lifelong learning and for further specialised study and careers

Modern Studies is therefore a vital part of the Curriculum for Excellence.

Our resources page contains up-to-date Department news as well as worksheets, presentations, homework activities, course information and useful weblinks to assist our pupils in reaching their potential.
