All National 5 PE pupils were given the opportunity to observe and participate in a training session with Scottish League cup finalists, Dundee United FC. The school and PE department benefit from a close partnership with St. Andrews University, which Dundee United use as their training base, therefore making the journey no more than a leisurely stroll through the town to University Park.

Pupils were given a written task to complete for the four factors which we have been studying which are Physical, Mental, Emotional and Social. They observed the entire training session and also had the chance to ask players and coaches some excellent questions which helped them with their answers. In one particular Q & A with injured player Callum Morris, the pupils found out how he was recovering from his injury, how he mentally prepares for matches and also that Eden Hazard (Chelsea FC) was the most skilful opponent he has faced.

As the pupils were so close to the players during their warm up and main skills session, it was an opportunity to see how professional players are prepared for a training session and also how players interacted on the pitch.

At the end of the session, staff and pupils had the opportunity to speak with manager and former Scotland internationalist, Jackie McNamara as well as various other players who took time to sign autographs and pose for ‘selfies’, which the pupils and some members of staff thoroughly enjoyed!

Overall it was a brilliant morning for all staff and pupils involved and it is an educational trip that the PE department will look to continue and develop over the coming years.
