Instrumental Award at the National Finals - September 2017

Congratulations to Holly Bartlet, Katie Grieve, Isobel Grieve and Zoe Mitcham as members of the Fife team, who along with two pupils from Bell Baxter, won the Instrumental Award at the National Finals.

The four pupils were presented by Mr Robert Stewart from the Robert Burns World Federation.

Lunchtime Recital - June 2017

The music department was delighted to welcome back Hannah Craib, a former Madras pupil on Tuesday 27th June. Hannah and her performing partner Vyara Mldenova from Sophia in Bulgaria are founder members of "Glas Duo" and have performed in Scotland, Bulgaria and regularly in and around Bremen in Germany where both are based. The pupils were thrilled to hear the recital and impressed with the different styles of music the duo played on the Violin and Viola.


Summer Concert - June 2017

Congratulations to all the pupils who performed at the concert on Tuesday the 20th June. The audience members were entertained with a variety of group and solo item - the school Wind Band, Junior & Senior String Orchestra, Junior Choir, Mixed Choir, Senior Girls Choir, Staff choir, Folk Group, Pipe Band and Clarsach Group. Soloists included Eugene Ritchie S4 on piano, Shona Zhang S6 on clarsach and Micah Scott S6 on tuba. Canongate primary school Glee Choir also performed two songs and a special thank you to the pupils, parents and staff who came along. Well done to all the talented pupils who took part and gave us all such an enjoyable evening.


Music Exam Success

Well done to all pupils who sat instrumental exams this term. Trinity Results so far –

· S1 Rioghnach MacFarlance was awarded a Distinction for her Grade 1 Clarsach exam.
· S2 Fin McGhie was awarded a Distinction for his Grade 5 Piano exam.
· S2 Michael Snodgrass was awarded a Distinction for his Grade 1 Guitar exam.
· S3 Joseph Mackie was awarded a Distinction for his Grade 6 Clarinet exam.

Thanks to Miss Russell, Mrs Gibson, Mr Higgins and Mr Milton for all their hard work.


Play Day - May 2017

In May the Music Department hosted another Play Day. Sixty primary instrumentalists came along to Madras and spent the day playing in the Wind Band, the Junior String Orchestra and Chanter Group along with some of the Kilrymont pupils. Every pupil also participated in a percussion workshop taken by George Gibson from Infectious Grooves. The day was rounded off by a final performance from each group to an appreciative audience of staff, parents and pupils.


Success at Bell Baxter Centenary Music Competition - March 2017

This year the Young Musician competition was held at Waid Academy. This inter-school competition between Madras, Bell Baxter and Waid is held every year giving three pupils from each school the opportunity to showcase their talents. This year's winner was Micah Scott from Madras and 2nd place went to Sam Vincent-Kilbride, also from Madras.


Fife Festival of Music - February 2017

Over 100 Madras pupils took part in competitive and non-competitive solo and group classes at the Fife Music Festival. The pupils all performed extremely well and had a very enjoyable experience.

Competitive Group Classes
The Junior, Senior and Mixed Choir all performed in the competitive choral classes and received Platinum Awards. The Wind Band performed in the Wind Band class and received a Silver Award. The Senior String Orchestra performed in the Orchestra class and received a Gold Award.

Non–Competitive Group Classes
The Junior String Orchestra, Clarsach Group and S2 Ensemble Group all performed in the non-competitive Secondary School Class. The Staff Choir performanced in the non- competitive Community Choral class.

Solo Class Winners
Fin McGhie S2 won the Advanced Piano Class and received an Outstanding award. Maisie Dury won the Under 13 Vocal Class and received an Outstanding award. Many other Madras pupils performed in solo classes and should be congratulated for their performances.

Congratulations and well done to all the pupils who performed.

 



Folk Music Award - January 2017

Congratulations to Katie Grieve S4, Natalie Rengger S3, Zoe Mitcham S2 and Isobel Grieve S4 for winning the 'Hands Up for Trad Landmark' award for their performance in the new and exciting folk group Abercraig. The group recently performed at the Caird Hall and recorded and televised by BBC Alba.

Christmas Choral Singers - December 2016

Memory Café – Hope Park and Martyrs Church

A group of talented Kilrymont pupils went along to Hope Park and Martyrs Church on Wednesday the 7th of December to provide entertainment for the memory cafés Christmas party. The pupils sang and played a selection of Christmas and Scottish favourites. Congratulations to the junior pupils and a big thank you to the Memory café for providing such delicious juice and cakes.

Tayside and Fife Hospital Christmas Concert for Clic Sargent

The Senior Girls' and Mixed Choir took part in the Fife and Tayside Charity Hospital Concert at the Caird Hall on the 8th of December. Their programme included 'Angels' Carol', 'Stand Alone', 'Rhythm of Life' and 'Ding Dong Merrily on High'. Many congratulations to all the singers who gave an outstanding performance.

Battle of the Bands - November 2016

Congratulations to Peter Visocchi, Lawrence Brown and Eugene Ritchie who represented Madras College at the Fife Rock school competition. The boys gave a great performance and entertained the audience with their original songs. The judges' comments were very positive.

'The songs were well crafted and catchy, a bit of REM and other influences. Good standard of musicianship and a driving rhythm section.'

Talent Show - October 2016

The annual Madras Talent Show took place on Thursday 27th October. Showcasing some of Madras' most talented pupils, acts ranged from classical Piano – Jed O'Donnell S3 playing Chopin, to a stunning dance routine by Taine McKinstray in S5. This year, for the first time, several of the acts performed songs that they had written and arranged themselves.

Bell Baxter Centenary Competition - March 2016

The 27th annual inter-school competition was hosted by Madras College on Tuesday 22nd of March. Nine pupils from Bell Baxter HS, Madras College and Waid Academy performed to an appreciative audience and the evening was a great celebration of the talented musicians.

Arran Tarvet, Madras College won the 2016 trophy with an outstanding performance on the Saxophone.

Fife Music Festival Success - January 2016

Over 100 Madras pupils have recently taken part in competitive and non-competitive solo and group classes at the Fife Music Festival. The pupils all performed extremely well and had a very enjoyable experience.

Competitive Group Classes
The Junior, Senior and Mixed Choir all performed in the competitive choral classes and received a Platinum Award. The Wind Band performed in the Wind Band class and received a Silver Award. Michael Sharp and Arran Tarvet played a piano duet in the Ensemble class and received a Platinum Award.

Non–Competitive Group Classes
The Junior String Group, Clarsach Group, S3 Ensemble Group and Trombone Quartet all performed in the non-competitive Secondary School Class. The Staff Choir performanced in the non- competitive Community Choral class.

Solo Class Winners
Isobel Grieve S3 won the Advanced Wood Wind Class and received an Outstanding award. Arran Tarvet S6 won the Open Wood Wind Class and received an Outstanding award. Ellenor Waddell won the Open Clarsach Class and received an Very Good award.

Many other Madras pupils performed in solo classes and should be congratulated for their performances.

On the final evening of the competition the Prestigious Young Musician Class took place. Out of the six finalists three pupils were from Madras. Ellenor Waddell S6, Arran Tarvet S6 and Michael Sharp S6 all gave excellent performances. The Young Musician trophy was eventually awarded to Michael Sharp.

Beethoven Plus Composing Project - November 2015

This term some of our music pupils have took part in a composing Project called Beethoven Plus. The joint project has organised by the University and The St Andrews Music club. On Tuesday 10th November, the professional musicians Daniel Tong (pianist), Krysha Osostowicz (violinist) and Madras pupils performed their composed pieces in a short concert in front of parents.

Music Award - November 2015

Congratulations to Katie Grieve S3 who won the Former Pupil Girls "Award for Performing". She collected her award on Wednesday 4th November at the Rufflets Hotel after her performance.

S2 Music Technology Class - 2014

Pupils have completed a creative music task and transferred their work to CD. Examples of the tracks created are included on the right.
