Music Department

Welcome to the Madras College Music Department. We have a thriving department. There are a variety of activities on offer from special projects to a varied extra-curricular programme! Pupils are given the opportunity to perform regularly at our Summer and Christmas concerts as well as special events throughout the year. These events include the school Talent show, the Burns Supper, the Fife Festival of Music, the Great Assembly as well as participation in many local community events.


Courses Offered

S1 - One music period a week.


S2/3 - Two periods per week.


Nat 4/5 - Three periods per week.


Higher and Advanced Higher - Four periods.

Annual Competitions & Events

Fife Festival of Music – individuals, groups, bands and orchestras all take part in competitive and non-competitive classes.
Fife Schools’ Burns Competition – winners of school competitions participate in the Fife Schools competition.
Bell Baxter Competition – a competition for accomplished musicians from Bell Baxter HS, Waid Academy and Madras College.
Dunhill Golf Competition – the pipe band perform at the prize giving ceremony.

External Music Examinations

We encourage and help pupils through a range of external music examinations in both performing and theory.  Pupils may study ABRSM performing or Trinity Guildhall.


Pipe Band

The Pipe Band play at a variety of local events.

Every year the pipe band play at the St Andrews Links golf events.

In the video clip, Pipe-Major Jamie Gillan (S6) leads Madras College Pipe Band onto the Old Course, St Andrews. The Pipe Band marched up the 18th hole to the final green and played at the prizegiving ceremony at a Links event. The 2013 event had excellent weather and pleased a large gallery of spectators, as well being broadcast on Sky.
